Conclusion

Today, Ely is a relatively large Cathedral stationed in a tiny town. While the surrounding village is highly conservative, the church itself has challenged the area's views today. In 2017 Ely held an event titled "The Journey of Hope," using the cathedral to raise money for migrants fleeing violence in the Middle East. They also have a science night that teaches the community about evolution. The Ely Cathedral, like its founder, continues to make waves of change amongst religion's ideas. Etheldreda was a saint-like no other. She was a woman who defied her husband and remained a virgin in marriage to join the church and establish a double monastery. In death, she was made a saint for repenting for her prideful ways. She is a saint and a patron of Ely depicted in numerous writings, carvings, and paintings from her death to the 14th century.
