Her Fame

While Etheldreda’s time at the abbey was short, her shrine and presence remained a constant in many followers' lives. In death, she was celebrated around the area. From her body's recovery to the 14th century, there are records of writings detailing her life and work.

For example, one of the more well-known hagiographers who wrote about Etheldreda’s life was Bede. Bede was a monk on scholar from what is today Northern England. His work He is considered to be a notable historian, and his work was considered to be groundbreaking in the work of histography. In his writings, he emphasizes Etheldreda's dedication to remaining a virgin during her two marriages. This writing is believed to have heavily influenced many of the artistic renditions of the benediction given at AEthelthryth's feast day, which references how Etheldreda remained a virgin during her marriage through the strength of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost protecting her from her husband’s advantages.
